Former Lockheed Martin CEO To Talk Leadership On Campus

Norman Augustine, the former CEO of aerospace and defense technology company Lockheed Martin, will speak on campus at 4:30 p.m. on April 28 in the Freeman Auditorium.

Augustine will deliver the Engineering Systems Program Distinguished Lecture, titled “Socio-engineering: Technology, Business, and Policy Systems for 21st Century Leadership.”

“Dr. Augustine was one of the early adopters of this vision of a ‘system of systems,’ inclusive of the technological, governmental, economic and social constructs that we are familiar with, and he brought this valuable insight to many of the high-profile positions he has held in the engineering field,” said Martin Pietrucha, director of Penn State’s Engineering Systems Program.

Augustine, a Princeton graduate, joined the Office of the Secretary of Defense in 1965 as assistant director of defense research and engineering. From there, he held high-ranking positions in the army and eventually chaired the Advisory Committee on the Future of The US Space Program in 1990. His decorated resume also includes chairmanship of the American Red Cross and National Academy of Engineering. He’s also served on the boards of Black and Decker, Lockheed Martin, Procter and Gamble, and Phillips Petroleum, as well as chairman of the Business Roundtable Taskforce on Education.

His curriculum vitae is also impressive, having co-authored four books, including “Augustine’s Laws,” and published the report “Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future.”

“As technology becomes more complex and engineers become more specialized, there is a tendency to lose sight of the larger context in which these technologies and engineering specializations exist,” Pietrucha said. “Engineers need to have a sense of how the technological systems that they are so familiar with interact with the governmental, economic and social systems that can aid or impede the development of the engineered systems that are so ubiquitous today.”
