James Franklin Goes To Class

Instead of sticking to his normal duties on the football field, Coach Franklin popped by Professor James Tierney’s Economics 104 class yesterday morning to talk to students about Leadership.

“I saw Coach Franklin give a talk on motivation in the TEDxPSU conference and reached out to him,” Tierney said. “Coach was more than willing to come and speak and he did a wonderful job.”

Coach Franklin did a 50 minute series of Q&A with Tierney’s students covering several different topics including characteristics he looks for in his team leaders, how his coaching career took off, and how to take criticism. He also gave a few tidbits of advice on how to be a leader for students pursuing leadership positions.

Though his ECON 104 class isn’t based on leadership, Tierney said he likes to discuss things other than economic — like leadership — to prepare students as much as possible for the real job market. Tierney said he’s taken a break from economics on a few different occasions to talk to his students about boosting their resumes and what hiring managers will be interested in.

“Sure it is important to go over macroeconomics material (we just finished Fiscal and Monetary Policy),” said Tierney. “But I am also a proponent of keeping my students motivated and exposed to a lot of things [and] it’s always good to hear it from other people, especially someone as influential and passionate as Coach Franklin is.”
