IFC President Releases Statement Following University Suspension Of Kappa Delta Rho

When Penn State announced on Tuesday it suspended KDR for at least three years, university officials ultimately “reversed a decision by the student-led Interfraternity Council (IFC), the governing body for fraternities at Penn State,” according to a press release.
IFC President Rick Groves released a statement following the decision, and fully supported the university’s decision to revoke the chapter’s recognition. “While the Interfraternity Council has been delegated the power to hear cases involving its member organizations, it is important to remember that Penn State University must wield the final authority on all matters where University recognition is concerned,” he said.
In order to recommend to kick the chapter off campus, the IFC’s 13-member Executive Board needed to vote unanimously. When the board couldn’t come to a unanimous agreement it recommended a “comprehensive member review,” among other extensive measures, instead. “Despite this recommendation, the IFC recognizes Penn State’s superior jurisdiction on the matter and fully supports its decision to withdraw the recognition of Kappa Delta Rho,” Groves said. The full statement can be read below.
While the Interfraternity Council has been delegated the power to hear cases involving its member organizations, it is important to remember that Penn State University must wield the final authority on all matters where University recognition is concerned. Based on the evidence provided and the precedent set by previous cases, the Interfraternity Council judged Kappa Delta Rho against the Conduct Process provided to it by The Pennsylvania State University. As a result of this conduct hearing, the IFC recommended a comprehensive member review followed by a structured remediation process to educate remaining members and reform the culture of the chapter. Despite this recommendation, the IFC recognizes Penn State’s superior jurisdiction on the matter and fully supports its decision to withdraw the recognition of Kappa Delta Rho.
