Linebacker Gary Wooten Jr. To Transfer From Penn State, Be Eligible Immediately

Gary Wooten Jr. will transfer from Penn State and be eligible to play immediately at another program. The news was first reported by Jourdan Rodrigue. She cites reports that Duquesne is the early frontrunner to land Wooten Jr., though his official destination has not been announced yet.

Wooten Jr. graduated in the fall with a degree in criminology. He recorded 25 tackles in his three seasons, and appeared in 28 games in his career. He made a career-high three tackles twice — once against UMass last season, and again vs. Temple in 2015.

Wooten Jr.’s departure comes as no surprise, as the linebacker most likely wasn’t going to see the field in 2016. His absence leaves the Nittany Lions with just six linebackers on campus this spring: Jason Cabinda, Brandon Bell, Nyeem Wartman-White, Von Walker, Jake Cooper, and Manny Bowen. The team has two commits that are scheduled to join the team in the fall in Cameron Brown and Shaka Toney.

Wooten Jr. is the latest in a series of transfers and early departures for the Penn State program. Christian Hackenberg and Austin Johnson both declared early for the NFL Draft, Bob Shoop and Herb Hand left to take similar positions at schools in the SEC, and Geno Lewis, Troy Reeder, and Daquan Worley have all transferred or left the team.
