Andrew Mackiewicz Earns Second Consecutive Men’s Sabre Championship

Defending national champion Andrew Mackiewicz became the fourth member of the men’s fencing team to win back-to-back titles Sunday at the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championship in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Mackiewicz was 19-4 in the round-robin, and after defeating Princeton’s Edward Chin 15-11, the fencer moved on to the semifinals with teammate and senior captain Kaito Streets. Streets fell to Ferenc Valkai from St. John’s, who ultimately faced off against Mackiewicz in the final. After falling 8-6 early, Mackiewicz stormed back with a vengeance and scored the match’s first three touches, taking a 9-8 lead. The sophomore talent then went on to beat Valkai 15-11, clinching the title and becoming the 2016 Men’s Sabre Champion.

Mackiewicz went 32-8 during his 20-15-15 campaign with an .800 winning percentage. Along with being the 2015 Men’s Sabre Champion, Mackiewicz also earned All-American honors last year. The now-sophomore is surely a force to be reckoned with after notching his second national championship.

Penn State finished in sixth place during the team event, dropping its hopeful 14th National Championship title bid. However, along with Mackiewicz’s championship win, the men’s and women’s teams experienced many impressive individual performances. Streets tied for third place, while Nobuo Bravo finished second and Howie Chan finished sixth in the foil event.
