THON To Host A Second THON To Make It ‘More About Attendees’

THON announced earlier today that it will host a second THON at the end of the month to make up for the disappointing outcomes of the first 46-hour dance marathon. Of course $9.7 million is a lot of money that will go a long way in the fight for a cure, but what good is a total if it isn’t Instagrammed, Snapchatted, and Tweeted? Honestly, what was even the point of THON if no one knows you were there?

THON’s executive committee reported it has received a near-constant stream of emails practically since the dancers sat down more than a month ago begging for a second opportunity to showcase the dance marathon. Students are voicing concerns that they weren’t able to get a cute pic with their roommate or that none of their Facebook friends could tell they stayed for almost 26 hours.

“THON is always first-and-foremost For The Kids, but there just weren’t enough opportunities this year for participants and attendees to brag about their involvement in one of the largest student-run philanthropies on the planet,” a release said. “That’s why we decided it would be beneficial to organize a second dance marathon in order to give various THON-goers the opportunity to perfect their ‘Four-Diamonds-with-a-member-of-your-org/friend’ Instagram picture or heartfelt Facebook caption.”

While it may seem like a hassle to drag all of the equipment back out, set up the Bryce Jordan Center, and reconvene all of the volunteers, THON believes it’s worth it. Where you would think that organizations would be annoyed in having to yet again design creative t-shirts and flashy letters, most students are grateful for the opportunity.

“THON wasn’t really enough about me the first time,” one committee member said. “Sure it’s great that almost half of the undergraduate student population comes out to celebrate raising millions of dollars to help find a cure for pediatric cancer, but I was really hoping to make this more about me.”

As for the total, that’s not really what matters this time around.

“Seeing as there isn’t really much time to raise any more money, we’re just going to use the same total reveal from February, but maybe blur the numbers a little bit so no one can really tell what they are,” the release said. “This THON isn’t really about the cure; it’s about you.”

THON 2016 take two, “Believing Further Beyond Boundaries,” will take place from Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24 and will again span 46 hours. In the words of the line dance, let’s rally!
