Beginning at 12 p.m. today, Lyft will officially launch in State College. Users will be able to download the app and begin requesting rides around town. The rideshare system began sending out text messages to prospective drivers in the area about a week ago and has since conducted on-boarding sessions to prepare for the launch.

Founded in 2012 by Logan Green and John Zimmer, Lyft’s goal is to reconnect people and communities through better transportation. Lyft’s entrance into the State College market represents the second ride sharing company to begin operations after Uber launched early last year. Hopefully the first Lyft passenger is just as excited as Mike the Mailman was.

“We’re excited State College is welcoming Lyft into the city,” a Lyft spokesperson said. “Our founding group of State College drivers includes a volunteer firefighter, a school bus driver, a 6th grade teacher, and the Penn State MBA Program Coordinator.”

Lyft has committed itself to treating people better and as a result boasts welcoming and friendly drivers and passengers.

“Whether they’re going to the game at Beaver Stadium or heading out to Mount Nittany, locals and visitors in State College will be able to rely on Lyft as their safe, friendly, affordable ride around town,” the spokesperson said.

While Lyft’s operations will mostly be focused around the State College area, users will be able to request rides across Centre County. To celebrate the launch, new passengers will be able to use the code “LYFTINSC” to receive $5 off their first Lyft ride within the coverage area.

Keep an eye out for the pink dashboard mustaches cruising around town. Now when there are no Ubers available, you have another option in Lyft.
