Report: Penn State Football’s Pat Freiermuth To Forgo 2020 Season

Penn State football star tight end Pat Freiermuth is expected to forgo his junior season with the Nittany Lions, according to a report by the Centre Daily Times.

The report explains that “a source with knowledge of the situation” stated that Freiermuth will not play for the Nittany Lions once the season begins.

It’s unclear if or when a postponed season would start for Penn State, as reports of a start date for the Big Ten continue to circulate. Freiermuth would be the second Nittany Lion this year to skip his final season in the blue and white, as Micah Parsons announced his decision to do so in early August.

Freiermuth had a dominant two seasons at tight end for Penn State. During his 2018 true freshman campaign, the Massachusetts native developed into one of Trace McSorley’s favorite targets by hauling in 26 catches worth 368 yards and eight touchdowns. One of those scores was a spectacular one-handed grab during the White Out against Ohio State.

The 6’5″, 260-pound tight end only improved with Sean Clifford this past fall. He finished with one less touchdown on the year, but had 43 catches worth 507 yards.

Expectations were high for Freiermuth’s junior campaign, as he found himself on the Biletnikoff and Mackey Award watch lists this past summer. He was considered one of the top tight ends in college football by many, and was featured in the first round of several NFL mock drafts.

The future early-round draft pick now leaves Happy Valley with 69 career receptions, 15 touchdowns, and 875 yards receiving. Freiermuth is tied with the Miami Dolphins’ Mike Gesicki for most scores by a tight end in program history.

Penn State Athletics did not immediately respond to a request for comment. We’ll update this post as more information becomes available.
