Penn State Police Launch New Transparency & Accountability Initiative

Penn State University Police and Public Safety announced a new Transparency and Accountability Initiative, a detailed overview of police training, data, and policies, the university announced Monday.

As a part of Penn State Police’s ongoing commitment to strengthen its relationship with the community, the public now has access to many policies, detailed arrest data, and other information about police operations at Penn State.

For several months, department administrators compiled relevant data from 22 Penn State campuses and other key information, which is now available to the public on the department’s website in an easy-to-use format.

David Gray, the senior vice president for Finance and Business, said that this initiative shows the department’s dedication of responsiveness to the Penn State community, as well as the current dialogue surrounding equity and justice.

“This initiative shows that UPPS is listening to the community,” Gray said. “And it provides the public with the data and tools needed to better understand police operations and a means to provide feedback.”

In order to provide recent information to the community, the website will be updated annually, or more frequently, as needed.

The associate vice president of UPPS, Charlie Noffsinger, shared that Penn State Police and Public Safety is committed to action, and he hopes that this initiative demonstrates that.

“We know the work is not yet done, as we anticipate more efforts related to training, recruitment and more,” Noffsinger said. “But we also know that making this essential information available to the public is a positive step in the right direction.”
