Ty Howle Named Penn State Tight Ends Coach

Just hours after Tyler Bowen officially announced he’s headed to Jacksonville to coach for the Jaguars, Penn State football has named a new tight ends coach.

James Franklin announced Friday Ty Howle will be the Ace’s new leader. Penn State also promoted cornerbacks coach Terry Smith to associate head coach and wide receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield to offensive recruiting coordinator.

Howle was a four-year Penn State letterwinner as an offensive lineman and served as a team captain in 2013. He was on Franklin’s coaching staff as an offensive analyst during the 2020 season.

“I am excited and honored to be the tight ends coach at my alma mater,” Howle said. “I want to thank Coach Franklin for giving me this opportunity to develop the tremendous young men in this program. Penn State University means the world to my family and me.”

After graduating from Penn State with a kinesiology degree in 2013, Howle’s made a few stops around the college football world. He earned a master’s degree as a graduate assistant at NC State before spending four seasons on Western Illinois’ coaching staff. He called plays during the Leathernecks’ 2018 season, earning a No. 21 national ranking in passing offense.

Stubblefield was promoted internally to fill Bowen’s previous position as offensive recruiting coordinator. He was able to successfully develop receivers like Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington during his first year in Happy Valley.

Smith’s promotion to associate head coach fills Sean Spencer’s previous role, who joined the New York Giants’ coaching staff following the 2019 season. The 2020 campaign was his seventh year in Happy Valley, where he also held the title of assistant head coach.
