What Are Penn State Students Listening To? One Site Crunched The Numbers

Ever wondered what Penn State students are listening to these days? Well, one website crunched the numbers and found out.

Everynoise.com compiles the top 100 songs that students listen to at a plethora of universities across the country and the world using “listening patterns and math.” Naturally, we decided to look at what our fellow students are listening to.

When looking at Penn State’s playlist, it was all over the place. The compilation included 50 different genres of music that University Park students listen to, with the most popular being pop. Most songs that stuck out on the list were the type that you would hear at a frat party. This included tracks like “UCLA,” “Uproar,” “Finest Hour,” and about any other song you would find yourself listening to on any given weekend.

The list also included songs from some of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia’s most famous musicians. Our personal favorites were from Pittsburgh native Mac Miller, who died in 2018. Philadelphia-based rapper Meek Mill also came in on the list with the song every Eagles fan likes to blast, “Dreams and Nightmares.”

It wouldn’t be a Penn State playlist without some nods to gamedays in State College. Right towards the top of the list is the “Rock and Roll Cheer” performed by the Penn State Blue Band. “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation also comes in on the list. It’s no secret that Penn State students were blasting these tunes while watching football games on TV this past season.

Penn State’s playlist had so much variety and showed how diverse the school is music taste-wise, but how did it match up to other universities in Pennsylvania or the Big Ten?

Temple’s favorite tunes are also pop music, but students from the Philadelphia staple listen to a lot more rap and R&B than Penn State students. Duquesne University, which is located in Pittsburgh, had students listening to a lot more country music with pop still being the most popular genre. Duquense students also seem to have an affinity for Broadway, with show tunes being one of the universities’ most listen to genres. Pitt students listen to a lot of indie-like music with a heavy dose of different types of rock music tied in.

Ohio State’s top genre of listening, outside of pop, is modern rock. Similar to Penn State, Ohio State students love to listen to the sounds of gameday, with “Le Régiment,” the song played during the famous pregame tradition of the dotting of the “I” in script Ohio, being one of the most-listened-to songs. Of course, one of the tracks on the Buckeyes’ playlist is a song aptly named “Ohio.” You gotta love Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Everynoise.com also allows you to see what universities are similar to yours. Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, and Wisconsin all have similar tastes to Ohio State.

Rutgers students are big fans of rap and trap music while Nebraska student’s favorite type of music is a genre called “Texas country” followed by “red dirt.” The wide range of songs just shows how geographically and culturally diverse each school in the Big Ten can be.
