Severe Staffing Shortages Prompt More CATA Service Changes

Due to ongoing “severe staffing shortages,” Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) will implement more service changes starting Monday, October 25. These moves are set to remain effective through the end of the year but will be reassessed as hiring resumes.

Here’s a brief look at the notable service changes to know before catching a ride:

CATA Service Changes

Service Calendar

  • All routes (except for Loop and Link campus service) cease momentarily at 11 p.m Monday through Saturday. (CATARIDE paratransit will proceed with its current times but will stop its service at 11 p.m.)
  • All Sunday CATABUS and CATARIDE will be temporarily rescinded.
  • All Saturday route’s frequencies will be modified from every 40 minutes to every 60 minutes.

A (Park Forest) Route

  • A route services will cease temporarily.

K (Cato Park) Route

  • The K Route service schedule will be adjusted to make two trips in the morning as well as two trips in the afternoon during pinnacle commute times.

HM (Toftrees/Nitanny Mall) Route

  • The HM route frequency will be modified during weekdays from every 30 minutes to every 40 minutes.
  • Frequency for Saturday routes will be altered from every 40 minutes to every 60 minutes.

P (Boalsburg) Route

  • P routes will stop operating at 8 p.m on weekdays. CATAGO! microtransit service will operate regularly as usual, ending service at 8 p.m.
  • All Saturday P route buses will momentarily halt, but CATAGO! microtransit routes will be accessible on Saturdays from 9 a.m to 8 p.m in the Boalsburg zone.

XP (Scenery Park) Route

  • Frequencies on weekday routes will be briefly changed from every 30 minutes to every 60 minutes. On Saturdays, all routes will have a 60 minute frequency. Connections to CATAGO! microtransit service will maintain access to Boalsburg from the XP.

XG (Pleasant Gap) Route

  • For the time being, the XG route will be terminated. Those using the XG route can take CATAGO microtransit service to access the XB route, or the HM route near the Walmart on Benner Pike.

Campus Service (Loops and Links)

  • Early morning service will be impermantely postponed. Service will now begin at 7 a.m.
  • The Green Link will cease momentarily. (Penn State Transportation Services will propose substitute options for those affected by these service changes.)

Game Day Shuttles

  • The Downtown Game Day Shuttle will be suspended immediately for the rest of the football season.
  • The South Atherton Game Day Shuttle carry on with its usual operation. Passengers of the Downtown Game Day Shuttle will have admittance to the South Atherton Game Day Shuttle by Easterly Parkway, or can take the White Loop to the Natatorium and walk to the stadium from that location.

CATARIDE Paratransit Service

  • CATARIDE Sunday services will provisionally halt.
  • CATARIDE will persist at its usual times, but stop their services Monday through Saturday at 11:00 p.m.

CATA staff will proceed to keep the situation under observation and disclose any information necessary to the public. If you’re a passenger impacted by any of these changes, feel free to contact CATA’s Customer Service Center at (814) 238-CATA (2282) and for any other relative information, don’t hesitate to visit catabus.com/careers.
