[Photo Story] Finding A Place To Nap On Campus

This week, I took it upon myself to find places one could sleep fully horizontally on campus. Stretching all the way out avoids the awkward fold over the desk while you’re sitting at your laptop between classes trying to catch some uncomfortable Zs.

And, with finals week upon us, staying on campus all day is a very realistic reality for many students. So, where can you nap, and nap well? I decided to find out.

First, I found myself in the Chemistry Building. This is actually where I was inspired to write this story because of the long couch-like benches there.

This corner is located on the third floor and has two long horizontal sleeping options.

This is great because you can nap with a study buddy or switch it up to your own preference. I rate the comfortability at an 8/10 — nice soft cushions and a corner all to yourself.

Moving on to the bridge, I spotted this bad boy.

Excellent view of campus and nice natural lighting. Lying on this bench was nice, but the cushion was slightly stiffer, which knocks some points off. I rate this 5/10.

Later on, I moved into the HUB, where it was much harder to find horizontal resting places.

I did find a spot in the student lounge, but it was very crowded, so it may not be the best for snoozing. That’s about a 4/10.

I was feeling discouraged in the HUB until I stumbled on the holy grail of horizontal resting places above the High School Music steps.

There is so much space that you can easily snooze with your entire study group with room to spare.

Out of all of the horizontal spaces I found, this one was the most comfortable to lie on. I’m giving it a high 10/10 ranking.

From the HUB, I moved across the street into Osmond Laboratory. I was told there were comfortable horizontal resting places here, and I was not disappointed.

On the first floor, I found this couch with a privacy fence! Unmatched. I feel like I could nap here comfortably for hours and not be bothered. This sleeping cubicle earns a 9/10.

From Osmond, I moved into the new Bellisario Media Center. There were multiple options that looked promising here among the communications students.

First, I tried this long gray couch.

It wasn’t very comfortable, but it did offer excellent lumbar support. Hard to find, 6/10.

When I moved up to the second floor, I found a blue couch with a nice view of the building.

It was very stiff, though, so if you’re into a firm mattress, I recommend you track this blue boy down. That’s about a 4/10.

From there, I walked up into the library. It’s very crowded this time of year, so finding open quiet spots was a challenge.

I found this couch on the third floor of the Pattee side. It was located in a very quiet study space and would be a great place to get away from the noise of stressed college students. However it was very dusty and probably 40 years old. Still comfortable, however, so 7/10.

My last stop was the “Harry Potter Room” for the iconic blue and orange arm chairs you practically sink into.

They’re extremely comfortable but not exactly fully horizontal. For being slightly upright, they lose a point — 9/10.

That’s all I’ve got, folks. However I’m sure there are more spaces to be discovered. So, search on, study hard, and make sure to rest. Happy finals week!
