Penn State To Celebrate ‘Earth Month’ With Events Throughout April

Penn State shared its plans to celebrate “Earth Month” throughout the month of April as an extension of the annual Earth Day holiday, which is celebrated every April 22.

The event’s month-long celebration is particularly meaningful for Penn State, which interestingly helped inaugurate the first Earth Day in 1970.

“April is an annual reminder that we have ample opportunities to explore how environmental issues intersect with social justice,” Paul Shrivastava, chief sustainability officer and director of the Sustainability Institute, said. “The fact that we all share this planet means we are united in our efforts to create a sustainable future. By participating in Earth Month, we can all learn how to get involved with the many initiatives across Penn State’s community to safeguard the environment and our communities.”

This year’s Earth Month events include…

  • “Climate Change: Our Response As Artists” panel with Dr. Richard Alley — April 6 @ 3 p.m. in the Freeman Auditorium (HUB)
  • Colloquium on the Environment: L. Hunter Lovins Keynote – Climate Change: Profitably Solving the Problem — April 6 @ 7 p.m. in Room 118 Katz Building
  • “What Honeybees Can Teach Us About Shaping Social Change” in the Sustainability Showcase Series — April 8 @ noon on Zoom
  • Spring Wild Edibles and Medicinal Weeds Walk with Martha Cownap — April 19 @ Penn State Great Valley
  • Watershed Cleanup Day — April 23 @ 8 a.m. throughout Centre County
