Gameday Observations: Ohio

Damn. It felt good to be back at Beaver Stadium, folks.

Penn State football kicked off its home slate with a dominant 46-10 victory over Ohio on Saturday. The smooth-sailing win led to the Nittany Lions being ranked No. 22 in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll. This is the first time James Franklin’s squad is ranked since week 11 of last season.

Besides just the on-field results, we took notice of plenty of things during the first football Saturday in Happy Valley this season.

Cocktagons Are Back

Well, duh.

To our delight, we were met by the beautiful sight of cocktagons in the tailgating lots early on Saturday.

Bathroom trips were easy and efficient and led to a much more enjoyable tailgating experience, to say the least. Fellow Onward State staffer Frankie Marzano and I made sure to hit one up early in the day to get gameday started off on the right foot.

BeReal Notification

The student section was hyped to see the BeReal notification go off during the game. If you’re not familiar with BeReal, once a day at a random time, users have to post a photo of what they’re doing, paired with a selfie.

Students captured unique POVs of Beaver Stadium, despite the shitty service.

#107kStrong

Never doubt Nittany Nation.

Despite it being a noon game against Ohio, Beaver Stadium was filled with over 107,000 people.

Even more surprising, the student section was pretty damn full, too. Not even a noon kick against a MAC team can stop Penn State students from showing out.

Athletics’ Marketing Popped Off

Whoever Penn State Athletics’ marketing team hired this year needs a raise. The video board had sick advertisements throughout the duration of the game. Our personal favorites were DelGrosso’s “Red Zone” ad that displayed when the team was within the 20-yard line and the Reese’s “It’s Good!” ad after a field goal.

There was a slight blunder when the Reese’s ad popped on the screen when Jake Pinegar missed a 42-yard field goal, though. Life goes on.

New Nittany Lion Fit

Wake up babe, a new Nittany Lion outfit has dropped.

The Symbol of Our Best wore a cupid outfit during the playing of, you guessed it, the “Cupid Shuffle.”

It looks like we may need to update our Nittany Lion outfit rankings this season…

Different Student Seating Process

This was kind of cool.

Instead of being assigned to one section once you get your ticket at the ticket booth, students have some more flexibility now. You’re given one of three ranges where you can sit — blue, white, or gray.

You can sit anywhere in your given range as long as there is room. The paper tickets handed out to students looked like this.

Future Looks Bright

Quarterback Drew Allar and running back Nick Singleton both balled out in the second game of the season. Allar tossed two touchdowns in the second half, while Singleton gashed Ohio’s defense for 179 yards and two touchdowns en route to being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Is that good?

We captured this wholesome picture of Allar ringing the bell after his first Beaver Stadium win with Sean Clifford looking on like a proud dad, too.
