Report: Penn State Hoops’ Four-Star Signee Carey Booth Requests Release

The first signee from Penn State men’s basketball’s Class of 2023 reportedly requested his release from the program Thursday night following the departure of head coach Micah Shrewsberry.

Carey Booth, a four-star forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and the son of Nittany Lion Calvin Booth, will plan to take his collegiate career elsewhere, according to high school coach Jason Smith.

The 6’10” four-star power forward is the No. 15-ranked national prospect in his position. Booth committed to his father’s alma mater in August despite offers from 21 other schools including Ohio State, Texas, Marquette, Northwestern, and USC.

Former Penn State hoops captain Calvin Booth remains the highest-drafted Nittany Lion in school history and the second-highest-ranked recruit in program history.

Booth’s request for release comes one day after the news of Micah Shrewsberry’s reported exit to Notre Dame.

Along with Booth’s intended departure, rising seniors Dallion Johnson and Caleb Dorsey opted to throw their names into the transfer portal, and Nittany Lion veteran Seth Lundy chose to forgo his final year of eligibility to declare for the 2023 NBA Draft.
