Report: Former Penn State Football Quarterback Trace McSorley Released By New England Patriots

Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has been released by the New England Patriots, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. McSorley will leave New England after signing with the Patriots in April.

McSorley was at Penn State between 2014 to 2018 and started for the Nittany Lions for three years. Over that period of time, McSorley took the program’s all-time passing yards record, breaking Christian Hackenberg’s previous record of 8,457 yards. McSorley finished his career with 9,899 passing yards.

The Virginia native also led Penn State to a 2016 Big Ten Championship and a win in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl. McSorley’s performance in the Fiesta Bowl produced the top total yardage in a bowl game in Penn State history.

McSorley was drafted in 2019 by the Baltimore Ravens, though he didn’t see his first NFL start until Christmas Day 2022 for the Arizona Cardinals. McSorley reconnected with former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien, now the offensive coordinator of the Patriots, after leaving the Cardinals at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
