Former Penn State Football Stars Mark Markovich & Ed O’Neil Named Honorary Captains Against Delaware

Former Penn State football stars Mark Markovich and Ed O’Neil were named honorary captains for Penn State football’s matchup against Delaware, the team announced Thursday. The announcement comes after James Franklin said that members of the 1973 Penn State football team would be present at the game for their 50th anniversary at his media availability Tuesday.

The 1973 Penn State football team earned a perfect 12-0 record and defeated LSU 16-9 to become Orange Bowl champions.

Markovich, an offensive lineman, played for the Nittany Lions from 1970 to 1973 and was a co-captain of the 1973 team. Markovich was versatile on the line, playing both guard and center in front of Heisman-winning running back John Cappelletti. Markovich was drafted in the second round by the San Diego Chargers.

O’Neil, another co-captain, played linebacker for Penn State from 1970 to 1973. O’Neil was drafted by the Detroit Lions with the No. 8 overall pick in the 1974 NFL Draft. After his playing days were over, O’Neil served as the linebackers and special teams coach at Rutgers before coaching in the Canadian Football League.

Last week, former Penn State wide receiver Allen Robinson and former Penn State interim head coach Tom Bradley served as honorary captains.
