Historical Exhibit Commemorates PSU Heritage

Most Penn State students are familiar with staple historical landmarks on campus like Old Main and the Lion Shrine. What most students don't realize is that over 70 historical markers and buildings decorate the beautiful west side of campus. On top of that, Penn State has a history of considerable accomplishments in the fields of engineering, agriculture, nuclear science and bio-mechanics.

A photo-exhibition, honoring just a part of Penn State's vast heritage, is currently on display at the Hintz-Alumni Center until June 8. The 32 pictures, which are hanging in Robb Hall, can be divided into three main categories: prominent people, historical buildings and noteworthy accomplishments.

Penn State Idol Competition Seeks to Discover Hidden Talent

Students who walked through the HUB-Robeson Center at this time last April will probably recall witnessing some pretty amusing head to head rap battles. The defunct Blue and White Rapper Contest has this year been replaced with the Penn State Idol Competition, for which voting began on Monday.

After reviewing all of the entries, a group of judges chose the sixteen best performers for the student population to vote on. Students interested in participating in the voting aspect of the contest can find the performers' auditions here.

Students have the opportunity to vote on their favorite prospective idols online until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 16.

Panel Discusses Excessive Drinking, Possible Solutions

State College District Judge Carmine Prestia said last night he is initiating lobbying efforts in the Pennsylvania Judicial System to increase the minimum fine for an alcohol related summary offense from $300 to $1000.

"I have seen enough significant behavior in terms of alcohol abuse, multiple offenders and repeat offenders," said Prestia during a panel discussion on the excessive drinking of Penn State students. "The fines aren't high enough," he said.

In just the first quarter of 2010, the State College police department has made 111 drunk driving arrests, an increase from last year. Sixty percent of all crimes officers respond to are alcohol related, said King.

Brought together by the College of Communications, panel members discussed the increasing problem of excessive drinking and dangerous behavior that Penn State students engage in.

Kingston to Perform at Penn State Altoona

Rapper Sean Kingston, who rose to fame after the release of his number one hit and debut single "Beautiful Girls," has been selected for the Altoona Spring Concert in the Alder Gymnasium on April 25th at 8 p.m.

The decision for this year's Spring Concert, sponsored by the Campus Activity Board, was made based on the results of a campus survey in Altoona. Tanya Palovich-Scott, the assistant director of student life, said that the "CAB wanted to include all students in the decision for this year's spring concert." In total, students had 16 performers to chose from. According to Palovich-Scott, Kingston was the "clear favorite."

Opening for Kingston will be God Made Me Funky, a progressive funk band from Toronto.

After releasing his second album, Tomorrow, in September, Kingston set out on a nation wide tour, which will take him well through out the upcoming Summer. He is also currently working on his untitled third album. While no release date has been set, Kingston did release a new single, "Eenie Menie," last month, which features teenage bad boy Justin Bieber.

Jakob Dylan to Play State Theatre

The State Theatre recently announced that Jakob Dylan, folk singer/songwriter, will be playing a show in support of his upcoming second solo album, Women and Country, on May 21, 2010.

On the Jakob Dylan and Three Legs tour, Dylan will be accompanied by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. Both Case and Hogan provided backing vocals to several of the tracks on Dylan's upcoming album, which is being produced long time partner T-Bone Burnett and is schedule for an April 6 release date.

Although the show is scheduled for after finals week, Kristy Cyone, the marketing director for The State Theatre, does not believe this will have a negative impact on student turnout.

"We believe there will be a great response to bringing this tour to Happy Valley," says Cyone, who believes Dylan's popularity will also draw a large number of community members. "I would recommend getting tickets early and not taking a chance on a sellout, because it's a very good possibility."
