Old State to Sell “Whiteout Cancer” Shirts to Support #TeamKayla

A few weeks ago, we wrote about the Penn State student Kayla Nakonechni who was diagnosed with cancer in August after dancing in THON 2013. Her friends and family, aptly known as Team Kayla, have rallied around her with support like no other. Now, the Penn State community can do the same.

T-shirts are being sold at Old State for $10 (cash only) to support Kayla and her family throughout her treatment. The front quotes the Penn State fight song, “Victory we predict for thee” with Old Main in the background, and the back says #TeamKayla along with “Whiteout Cancer” in a heart made of paw prints.

The design for the t-shirts was created by Rachel Wallen, Jeff Lowe, and Gab Griffith, Penn State 2012 graduates and close friends with Kayla. Originally, blue shirts were made for the Penn State vs. Syracuse game for Kayla’s close family and friends. Because of the overwhelming response from the community, they decided to make another shirt to help out the Nakonechnis, says John Tecce, Kayla’s boyfriend and 2012 Penn State grad. They figured that the Whiteout theme was a perfect fit, considering Kayla’s involvement in Nittanyville as the Homecoming co-chair.

All proceeds will be donated to Kayla and her family to help with costs of her treatment. If you’re not in State College but would like to purchase a t-shirt, you can call 814-234-1415.

Kayla, who recently became a Four Diamonds child, was paired with Nittany Nation through the Adopt-A-Family program for THON 2014. You can follow her story and journey through treatment at her blog, “Life is Tough…But I’m Tougher!”, Team Kayla’s Facebook page, and Team Kayla’s Twitter account.
