The Best Items You Can Rent From The Library

With only one more week left until finals, it’s time for students to begin cramming. You might be in a predicament if you just realized you don’t have the resources to do the things you want to do. Don’t worry Penn Staters — the library has you covered.

The Pattee-Paterno Library owns an assortment of items you can rent at a moment’s notice, ranging from the dire necessities to the seemingly unthinkable. Since it’s cramming season, you should know what’s available to get you ready for the tests you are more than likely not prepared for. Here are some of the things you can rent from the library:

Laptops

A laptop is a necessity at college nowadays. Whether you are using the laptop for note taking, studying, or Netflix — and it’s really none of my business — you will need to use a computer at some point in your college career. So if you didn’t feel like forking out the money your freshman year to buy a laptop, or if you spilled coffee on your new one while doing some late-night studying at Irving’s, the library has you covered.

You get the choice of one 2006 Dell 620 Latitude laptop with the most state-of-the-art operating system available in Windows XP to give you a machine that may or may not frustrate you to the point of destruction. Remember though, you must return it before the library closes, so don’t do anything too drastic to the little machine. You can even rent a laptop for seven days, so if you wanted to study while also catching up on the latest episode of Friends at the same time, that could be an option. Just remember that if you do loan a laptop, return it on time. If you don’t, the late fee you will have to pay ($25 per day) will definitely suck.

Headphones

If you lost your favorite headphones or if your current ones are tangled up so much that you can’t even, then the library can definitely set you up. Even though headphones are very easy to replace and there’s almost no point in renting them from the library, you might as well milk that “free” library access as much as you can. You can check out headphones for a four-hour time slot, so you have plenty of time to use them for that gym session you were trying to get in, or to help you take a nap due to the lack of sleep you’ll be getting next week.

Phone Charger

If you have that annoying friend whose phone always seems to be dead and is constantly using your charger, then tell them to shut up and head over to the library. The library is full of Android and iPhone chargers to help satisfy any phone owner. There are charging stations that can charge up to eight phones, so you and seven of your friends can all charge your phones at the same time without having to share only one cord. Sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night.

Pencil Sharpener

Picture this: You’re writing down review notes for your class that you need to study for when all of a sudden, your last pencil breaks. You’re flustered, frustrated, and don’t know what to do. Well, you don’t have to be frustrated anymore because the library carries pencil sharpeners you can rent. The sharpeners vary from the colorful ones you used in elementary school all of the way to the loud, obnoxious, electric sharpeners. You technically don’t have to rent these, but they’re located all over the library, including the stacks and the help desks.

Turntable

You will probably be up studying for awhile, so you’ll need some time to relax and get your mind off of school. What better way to do that than to become your own DJ? The library offers turntables for rent, but you will have to provide your own records. If you are a student that needs a break and is capable of laying down some funky tracks — or you just want to pretend to be a DJ — a turntable will definitely suit your style.

****

There are many more things you can rent from the library. Some items may cost you money, so make sure to check with the librarians before you get a bill you weren’t expecting. The library will be filled with a lot of students during the next two weeks, so make sure to get down there early to have the best chance to rent some pretty helpful items.
