Matt Skoff Trying Out For Flyers ECHL Affiliate

Matt Skoff’s hockey playing days may not end at Penn State. The goalie who just wrapped up his senior season will get a tryout with the Reading Royals, a professional hockey team in the ECHL, affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Skoff has signed to an Amateur Tryout (ATO) agreement. If he eventually signs a full contract with the Royals, he will become the fourth Nittany Lion to break into professional hockey since the team joined Division-1 four seasons ago.

Skoff was one of the starters from Penn State’s first season in NCAA hockey as a freshman. Because of that, he holds the goalie record for the Nittany Lions in almost every category you can think of, including games started, win percentage, and saves. He ended his career with a 32-32-7 record and a 2.88 goals against average.

The senior became involved in a goalie controversy in his final season for still splitting minutes with the junior goalie Eamon McAdam, despite the feeling that the younger goalie was performing better on the ice. McAdam eventually passed up Skoff late in the season, but struggled in the full time role, giving the senior a few chances in relief duty throughout the final weeks. His final appearance in the Blue and White was in the Big Ten Tournament in relief of McAdam during a blowout loss to Michigan.
