Men’s Soccer Goalie Arie Ammann Earns Big Ten Defensive Player Of The Week

The Big Ten named freshman men’s soccer goalkeeper Arie Ammann the Defensive Player of the Week after he led Penn State to back-to-back wins in his first two starts.

This is the second straight week a Penn State goalkeeper was awarded Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors. Senior goalkeeper Evan Finney was named the winner last week after leading Penn State to a scoreless draw against powerhouse Stanford.

Ammann was asked to step in for Finney after the senior took the brunt of a dangerous tackle in a game against UC Berkeley. Ammann got his first start in place of the injured Finney days later against James Madison.

The freshman made five saves and earned a shutout in his collegiate debut against the Dukes. He followed that performance with another solid showing against Oakland, making two saves on the way to his second win as starting goalkeeper.

His biggest moment of the weekend may have been the crucial save he made off of a deflection down the stretch against James Madison to preserve the win for Penn State.

“The hardest thing is to make a save you’re not expecting to make,” Coach Bob Warming said of Ammann’s save on Friday. “The ball deflected off of Robby. You’re not expecting to make a save there and to get down as fast as he did on this wet surface is unbelievable.”

With the status of Finney unknown currently, Ammann is likely going to start again Friday. But with two goalkeepers performing at this high of a level, there could be some interesting competition when both are cleared to play.
