Penn State’s 2020-21 Research Expenditures Near $1 Billion

Penn State’s research expenditures for the 2020-21 fiscal year totaled $993.1 million — a 1.5% increase from the previous year.

About $610 million of the total stems from federal funding, which is down $22.4 million from last year. Senior Vice President for Research Lora Weiss said in a release that this decrease was due to a shift from equipment acquisition to assembly that led to a $40 million decrease in the Department of the Navy funding.

“We are exceptionally impressed at how well our faculty continue to persist during these times, demonstrating their resilience and passion for pursuing scientific and scholarly discoveries and doing so despite additional burdens ranging from federal compliance to the demands of our personal lives,” Weiss said.

The College of Engineering, the College of Medicine, and the College of Education all received increased research funding. The College of Engineering’s funding rose by $28 million, the College of Medicine’s funding rose by $24 million, and the College of Education’s funding rose by $6.5 million.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ funding increased by $2.7 million, the National Science Foundation funding increased by $2.3 million, and the Department of Defense agencies funding excluding the Navy, Army, and Airforce increased by $8 million.

Research funding from the state of Pennsylvania was held at $49.4 million, and private industry funding stalled at $23.6 million. Internal funding increased from $15.7 million to $240 million.
