Nittany Lions In The NFL: Championship Sunday Roundup

Following the results of last week’s NFL playoff games, Penn State was guaranteed to have a representative in the Super Bowl. Luckily, both the AFC and NFC’s title games came down to the wire in one of the most eventful days of playoff football in recent memory.

With a big win from the Los Angeles Rams, two Nittany Lions punched their tickets to Super Bowl LVI. Before the big game gets underway, let’s see how they fared in this weekend’s championship games.

Nick Scott

In what has been a sneaky breakout season for the former Nittany Lion, Nick Scott continued his strong playoff performance with another big game Sunday, helping the Rams reach their second Super Bowl in five years.

Headlining Scott’s play on Sunday was a big open-field hit on star 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel to prevent a first down. Scott finished the game with six total tackles as Los Angeles beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 to advance to the Super Bowl, where the team will take on the AFC-champion Cincinnati Bengals.

Robbie Gould

On the other side of things in the NFC Championship Game, Robbie Gould entered So-Fi Stadium Sunday after playing hero in the 49ers’ upset over the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round a week ago.

Gould added to his perfect playoff resume on Sunday by nailing his only field goal attempt from 38 yards while making both of his extra-point tries. The former Penn State kicker is now 21-for-21 on field-goal attempts and 34-for-34 on extra-point attempts across his playoff career.

Other Notables

  • 49ers defensive lineman Kevin Givens recorded two tackles in his team’s loss to the Rams.
  • Rams defensive back Grant Haley didn’t record any stats this week, but he’ll head to Super Bowl LVI alongside Los Angeles, too.
