Penn State Releases Class Of 2020 Commencement Weekend Schedule

After previously announcing a long-awaited in-person commencement ceremony for the Penn State Class of 2020, the university released a brief schedule of events this week.

The Class of 2020’s original commencement ceremony was virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, a true in-person ceremony will begin Friday, April 29, and conclude Sunday, May 1. All interested in attending must register here before Friday, April 8.

“I’m thrilled to be welcoming the Penn State Class of 2020 and their parents, families and friends to University Park for the in-person celebration of their academic achievements,” President Eric Barron said in a release. “To the class of 2020 — I am so proud of all that you accomplished as students at Penn State and I cannot wait to see you here on campus to celebrate you, your Penn State academic accomplishments and all that you have done now as Penn State alumni.”

“Commencement” begins in the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday, April 30. Those who earned their undergraduate degrees will start at 9 a.m. and noon, while graduate degree recipients will follow starting at 4 p.m. Students won’t need to wear caps and gowns, but they will get a chance to finally walk the stage and hear their names called.

Each celebration is estimated to be 90 minutes long, and all participants must adhere to the university’s COVID-19 guidelines. There will also be a livestream available for those who cannot make it to State College. Livestream information can be found on the event’s website.

Symbolic ceremonies aside, Penn State will host other interactive events on campus throughout the weekend. The university’s annual end-of-semester music festival, Movin’ On, is set to return to the IM Fields on Friday, April 29. Penn State will also host open houses and receptions at each academic college on April 30. The Penn State Alumni Association will host a “welcome home” tailgate on April 30, too.
