Your Best (Worst?) State College Apartment Horror Stories

Earlier this month, we set out to hear your apartment horror stories, and you didn’t disappoint. From crazy roommates to broken doors and faulty ceilings, you definitely didn’t hold back.

Whether you’ve already graduated or you’re still a student here, these stories seem to still haunt you. Here are some of the best (and worst) apartment horror stories we’ve received so far:

Molly

Molly once returned home to find out that her roommate had punched out the window after coming home from the bar too drunk. To make matters worse, Molly took on the brunt of the responsibility from it.

“She never cleaned up the mess, and I was responsible for all of the damages,” she said.

CJ

CJ’s roommate peed on the floor and ripped off the cabinet door. CJ said, “She’s fucking whack.”

Kristen

As a 2016 graduate, Kristen originally thought she was moving into a nice place for her senior year. She was quickly proven wrong when, after only one month, her ceiling completely caved in.

“Any time it rained or snowed, for a full YEAR, it rained in my room, too,” Kristen said.

Guess you could say she ended her Penn State career with a bang?

Jen

Living on frat row isn’t always fun and games, and Jen would know. She says her apartment was broken into every single time her roommate left to go home.

Karl

Karl graduated in 2014, but he can’t seem to let this one go. The front door of his apartment building did not latch, and it took months of complaining for maintenance to finally come and replace the door. Just when he finally felt safe, he realized he had lost his keys because he never had to use them. That would result in a $50 key fee for Karl.

It doesn’t get much better, sadly. The whole building was heated from just one boiler. Even on warmer days, the boiler still ran because of some rule that heat needed to be supplied up until a certain calendar date. So much for enjoying the nice weather, right?

Karl wasn’t done just yet. He told a story about how two girls, after a night out for Thirsty Thursday, were screaming the lyrics to “We Are Young” in the parking lot right outside of his building at 2 a.m. Everyone woke up and started to yell at them, and Karl says he still thinks about that moment whenever that song comes on.

“[I think] back to the atrocious things yelled at those two girls and am filled with pride that my roommate and I had the best [insults],” he said.

Alyssa

Alyssa threw a party for a few friends one night and woke up the following morning to see that one of her guests pooped on the center of the carpet. Talk about a morning surprise, right?

Thought it couldn’t get worse? Someone else had walked through the pile and spread it around the apartment. Her roommate’s cat even ate some of it and then proceeded to throw it right back up.

“To this day, we still have no idea who crapped on our floor,” she said.

MG

It’s pretty much expected that once you move into a place, everyone living there will do their part to keep it clean, right? Not exactly.

MG, a 2016 graduate, moved in for the school year after the other two roommates lived there for the summer. MG walked into “insects and flies gathering throughout the entire house.”

Not an ideal way to start the year, to say the least. The landlord even threatened to have the health inspector come to the house. Luckily, the two roommates got their act together and cleaned the house to pass the health inspection.
